Join Mattilda in Toronto!

The fantastic Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore is coming to town on her fabulous North American tour! I was lucky enough to meet Mattilda when I was a contributor to this groundbreaking book that she conceived and edited, and I’m so honoured be reading at the Toronto launch of her latest novel So Many Ways To Sleep Badly (which is one of the finest and most innovative books I’ve read in a long time.) I’ll be reading from my latest, Fear of Fighting, which is now available.

“Vegan A Go-Go” is sure to be yum yum!

Sarah Kramer, who Herbivore magazine called “The World’s Coolest Vegan”, is currently touring with her new cookbook, Vegan A Go-Go. Having tried recipes from her previous three cookbooks (which have sold over 150,000 copies combined), I’m definitely looking forward to trying out some new tasty meatless delights!

With an awesome 150 recipes, Vegan A Go-Go is meant to fit in the backpack of the herbivore on the road. Recognizing that finding decent vegan cuisine can be near to impossible while traveling, Sarah focuses on meals that are “are easy to prepare with a minimum of ingredients but guaranteed to deliver energy, nutrition, and great flavour” (Arsenal Pulp Press).

Our own Stacey May launches Fear of Fighting

It’s true: we’re shameless about spreading the word of the amazing accomplishments of our team members.

Since our publisher and blogger Stacey May Fowles is probably all humble about it, I will do the honours of promoting her shamelessly!

She will be launching her new book, Fear of Fighting, illustrated by Marlena Zuber, at:

THIS IS NOT A READING SERIES
Tuesday, October 14, 2008
The Gladstone Hotel
1214 Queen St. West (Queen just East of Dufferin)
Toronto
7:30PM-12AM

The two will compare notes with Mariko Tamaki on the creative process.

Since I’m all blocked and stuff, and considering the Artist’s Way (how 80s of me), I’m going to try and make it.

There will also be a live set by Tomboyfriend!

Love for Judy Blume

If Picasso had his Blue Period, then Judy Blume had her Period Period. Man, did I learn a lot about menstruation from these books. [Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret] was the one that got passed around feverishly in school. Not only did it teach us a (futile) breast enhancement exercise, it introduced us to ”Two Minutes in the Closet,” a game we played at many parties thereafter.

Kinnie Starr Comes To the Page

I’ve loved Vancouver-based Kinnie Starr since she emerged on the music scene in 1995, so I was more than happy to hear that she’s put her fantastic songwriting talents to the page with a new book titled How I Learned to Run (House of Parlance Media):

From Kinnie Starr, an incredibly talented artist deemed “edgy” and “enchanting” by The New Yorker, comes a beautifully rendered – and oft-times haunting – collection of poetry. These are poems that evoke and provoke and sing and scream. Kinnie has mastered the art of making words live and breathe. Her words are not soon forgotten.

You can check out some sample poems from the September 2008 release here, and catch some of Starr’s musical talent below.
