VOLUNTEER WEBMISTRESS/WEBMASTER

Do you dream in HTML and code just for kicks? If you’re looking for a new place to exercise your web design skills and get involved in independent media, Shameless magazine wants you.

Shameless, a progressive Canadian magazine for teenage girls, is seeking someone to take over the role of webmistress/webmaster for www.shamelessmag.com. Our ideal candidate is a code-savvy web geek with a flair for design. Must be familiar with HTML, CSS, PHP, online form and database building, message boards, blogs and other web technologies. The successful candidate will be taking over maintenance of the current website, adding new content and designing new elements when necessary.

Like every job on this grassroots magazine, this is an unpaid, volunteer position. Work will be done from home, so you must have your own computer and reliable access to the internet. You should be able to commit at least 5 hours a week to this project and be willing to attend weekly or biweekly meetings in downtown Toronto.

To apply, please e-mail a resume, cover letter and samples of your work to submit@shamelessmag.com. The deadline for applications is Monday, Nov. 14.

They love us! They really love us!

The good people of Toronto weekly NOW (www.nowtoronto.com) have named Shameless Toronto’s best magazine! It’s the second-year in a row they’ve bestowed us with such praise, and their write-up on the mag brings a tear to our eye:

BEST MAGAZINE: Shameless

Not since the glory days of Sassy has there been a tome for teen girls with a voice anywhere near as intelligent, edgy and irreverent as our own homegrown Shameless . Since dreaming up the stylishly designed, turbo-charged mag as a senior thesis project at Ryerson, editors Melinda Mattos and Nicole Cohen have refused to treat their readers as idiot consumption-minded clones, covering everything from activism and sex advice to DIY fashion with the wit, zeal and zero-bullshit frankness of the best zines. Not only do they walk the talk by involving an editorial board of hella-smart teen girls, but their fab launch parties (featuring great girl-positive indie artists) illustrate their community-minded spirit. They’re like the amazingly cool, clever big sisters everyone wishes they had.

We are also very proud to announce that Shameless has been nominated for a 2005 Utne Independent Media Award, in the category of Best Personal Life Coverage.

Needless to say, it’s been a pretty swell week here at Shameless HQ. Hope you’re all enjoying the new issue.
